The SSES – EC is a European think tank born on the initiative of a group of representatives of academia and research, business environment, public institutions and civil society with activity or concerns in the field of energy security.
Energy security is a vital component of national and international security in the current global geopolitical, economic and technological context. It ensures the stability, prosperity and sustainable development of modern society, being a central pillar of a resilient and competitive economy.
Energy security within the European Union is a strategic priority, given the increased dependence on energy imports and the need to diversify energy sources and resources. This is a key area for ensuring common security, strengthening the EU’s position on the geopolitical stage and reaffirming its commitment to energy autonomy and interdependence for the benefit of all European citizens. Energy security means not only guaranteeing continuous access to energy resources, but also diversifying sources, reducing geopolitical dependencies and promoting sustainable technologies. In the age of digitalization and energy transition, smart grids, energy storage and green technologies play a crucial role in modernizing and securing energy systems. Without robust energy security, states are exposed to vulnerabilities that can be exploited by unfavorable actors, causing economic crises, political instability and potential conflicts. Investments in energy infrastructure, research and development, as well as international cooperation are essential for strengthening energy security. Strategic partnerships, bilateral and multilateral agreements and the integration of energy markets contribute to greater interconnectivity and solidarity between nations.
As global energy demand continues to grow, energy security challenges are intensifying. Climate change, population growth and urbanization, together with rapid technological developments, require constant adaptation and innovation in the field of energy. In this context, the SSES – EC considers that energy security is more than access to energy sources; it is a complex holistic policy ecosystem, strategies and technologies that ensure a safer and more prosperous future for humanity. Ensuring this security requires vision, determination and cooperation at all levels – national, regional and European. Beyond physical infrastructure and energy resources, energy security also depends on human and institutional factors. The education and training of energy specialists, together with a robust and transparent legislative framework, are essential for anticipating and responding to emerging challenges. Energy culture and public awareness of the importance of energy security and sustainability are key components of a smart energy security policy. As society becomes more and more dependent on technology and energy, it is vital for every citizen to understand how energy systems work and their role in ensuring national and European security. Another key aspect is the integration of innovative technologies and adaptability to rapid changes in industry. Artificial intelligence, blockchain and other emerging technologies can provide solutions for monitoring, managing and securing energy networks. In addition, energy security cannot be viewed in isolation from other aspects of national and European security. Diplomatic relations, trade, human rights and the environment are interconnected and directly influence energy security.
Energy security requires unprecedented collaboration between governments, industry, researchers and civil society. In the face of climate change and geopolitical pressures, the ability to build strong partnerships and innovate continuously will determine the success and resilience of communities in the 21st century. In this context, the SSES – EC will play a crucial role in policy modeling, directing education and research and informing the public about energy security challenges and opportunities.
